Installation & Autoconnect Settings
Author: Da_L
Base Version: 2.0 Build 2003.06.08
Last Updated: ?
The version used here is upp_2.00_build_2003.06.08, which, atm this tutorial was written, is the latest pre-release for UPP2. It's possible that in the final release the looks may change a bit, but it shouldn't make much difference.
When you start UPP for the first time, it might seem to 'hang' a bit; this is normal, it's just building the settings. This will only happen on first load.
Two windows will popup. The mirc-option window and a popup asking if we want to choose which modules to load. The mirc options window isn't that important, but you might wanna fill in some random stuff so mirc wont show you the options window again on next load.

Click OK to close the mirc options, and give the focus to the UPP one.

Click yes in this dialog.
After that the dialog below will popup. You use it to choose which modules to load. All the different parts of UPP are stored in modules, if you don't need certain features, then don't load the corresponding module (so that you don't waste space and resources).
- Acros: short name for 'acronym'. This can, for example, output "laughing out loud" whenever you type "lol"
- Addons: You can load some additional (built-in and external) addons with this module.
- Autoconnect: Connects you to one or multiple networks when starting UPP. This is pretty useful if you're always on one or more 'basic' networks.
- Backup: This module allows you to make a backup of all UPP settings, either manually or automatically when UPP starts.
- Batch: For batch dcc-sending files.
- Browser: Fserve browser. This will open fserves using UPP's fserve browser, where you can click to get/queue files instead of manually typing commands (will not work with every fserve type though).
- Custctcp: For custom ctcp replies (e.g. overwrite the mirc default ones, and add new ones yourself).
- Custom: Doh, some custom options.
- DCClog: Logs all dcc-transfers ever in a separate window.
- Debug: When the debug module is enabled, you'll see all exact events happening. For normal use this is very annoying though, so if you don't have to debug something, you can leave it off.
- Decryption: Automatically detects encrypted messages and tries to decrypt them.
- Fileserver: The UPP file server module.
- Fkeys: Enables functions access via functionkeys on your keyboard, and allows you to manually add new ones.
- FTP: Allows you to run an advertisement which announces an ftp.
- Games: Some games when you're bored (not implemented in the current version yet). :P
- General: This is UPP's main module. In it are all the basic options, as well as auto-identify, autojoin, and autovoice settings. It should always be enabled.
- Importer: Enable this module if you want to import settings from a previous version of UPP, or from a completely different script. UPP will try to recover as much of your settings as possible.
- Notify: When enabled, you can add certain people to your notify-list. When one of them connects to any irc-network you're already connected to, you will get be notified in your active window.
- Ostats: Keeps track of how long you've spent on irc.
- Otherads: Miscellaneous 'advertisements' like channel rules, requests or notices.
- Performance: Here, you can disable some of UPP's functions to improve performance (if you desire).
- Protection: Enables a bunch of UPP protection stuff. For instance, Channel protection (flood/caps), and personal protection (spam/ctcp floods). Also enables the 'shitlist'.
- TDCC: Enables basic fileserving via Text DCC
- Themes: I recommend you enabling the theme module; without it your mirc will look a bit boring... also allows you to edit almost every style used in UPP
- Updater: Will automatically check for a update on startup, and notify you when there's a new version of UPP available
- XDCC: Enables fileserving via an XDCC
If you have no clue what modules to load; for basic use I'd say: Autoconnect, general, protection, and themes. If you want to load/unload a module later on, that's always possible via the control panel. After you click OK, the modules you chose will load.

If you loaded the autoconnect module (which you most likely did) this window will popup. Click 'ok', and we'll configure your autoconnect settings.

Click the add button to add a server (how logical :P)

Servername shouldn't be that hard on most irc servers the ports can go from 6667-7000, although this can be different on every network. Pass isnt't needed unless you are ircop or connecting via a BNC.
I strongly recommend you enable 'force settings'. If you don't, and rely on the nick settings in the mirc dialog, your nicks might get screwed up after a netsplit, or a /nick. Nick and alternate nick should be clear, email and name can be any type of crap.
Repeat this until you added all your favorite servers to the list. When UPP starts, it will connect you to every server in your autoconnect list.

Channel Settings
Before we continue setting up UPP, you need to know something. You will see the following boxes throughout the UPP settings:

With them you can specify if a certain function should work for all, all except a few, or only a few channels. For the channel format you need to know the network name, e.g. the $network. This is not always the same as the address without the irc. and the .net. Efnet for example has 'efnet' as network name, but irc.atomicchat.net 'Atomic-Chat' with a -. If you want to get the network name of the network you're currently connected to, just type //aecho $network or use the 'tip' immediately below.
In the channel box, you have to fill in channel names in the format 'network.#channel', eg 'efnet.#mycoolchan'. If you're currently connected, you can leave the network. out, and UPP will fill in the networkname of the active network.

Control Panel
UPP's control panel is where you go to change all module settings. To open the control panel, click on UPP in your mIRC menu, and choose "control panel..."

You'll then land into UPP's control panel. Everything looks pretty much like Windows, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Written by Da_L. Thanks to hsim for pointing out some errors in this tutorial. Of course also thanks to KyD for writing the best mirc script ever.
This tutorial has been reformated by Spaceman-Spiff and proofread by brewthatistrue.
